The opportunity to provide feedback on the final concept plan for the proposed Altona Meadows Community Dog Park has now concluded. If you would like to get in contact with us, see the Who's Listening box (right).

In mid-2018, following the success of the Brooklyn Dog Park, Council was asked to investigate establishing a similar dog park as part of the Altona Meadows Community Park redevelopment.

Consultation on the concept plan for a new off-lead dog park at the Altona Meadows Community Park commenced in mid-November 2018 with a second round of consultation on a draft concept plan in early 2019. Submissions closed for the draft concept plan in March 2019.

What we heard

March - April 2019

Thank you for your submission on the consultation for a fenced off the lead dog park in the Altona Meadows Community Park. We received 80 submissions as part of this consultation and we heard that there is a strong desire for a fenced off the lead dog park in Altona Meadows.

We received lots a good feedback on what you want to see in a dog park including:

  • lots of shade
  • secure entry
  • drinking fountain/ water bowls for all the family
  • seating
  • having a quiet area for small and nervous dog and
  • the supply of litter bags

However, concerns have been raised about whether the Altona Meadows Community Park is the best place to have this fenced dog off leash park. Following ongoing conversations with local residents it has been decided to seek a better location for this much needed community asset. Over the next 12 months Council officers will investigate other the parks with a view to construct a fenced dog off lead for the Altona Meadows community.

We will take the great information that you have provided via your submission on what you want to see in the dog park and ensure that we incorporate it into the design once the appropriate location has been found. If you would like to provide any further feedback or suggestions on a future location for the dog park, we would love to hear from you

Again, Council thanks you for the time you have taken in providing feedback on the fenced dog off lead park for Altona Meadows and we will keep you informed on our progress.

November 2018 - January 2019

Valuable insights from the local community was captured in several ways during the consultation period including survey forms, Council’s Facebook, emails and conversations with officers at the drop in session in November 2018.

See detailed survey results here or refer to the document library (right).

All feedback received informed the concept plan.

A variety of elements have been included in the final concept plan including:

  • A fully fenced dog park
  • two entry gates, one each side
  • new bins and seating
  • new drinking fountain with dog bowl
  • open space and kick-about will be protected
  • deciduous tree planting for summer shade
  • proposed toilet block connected to path
