Keeping locals local

Council, in partnership with the Hobsons Bay Affordable Housing Trust, aims to deliver a best-practice affordable housing development at 7–45 Epsom Street, Laverton that is socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and universally accessible. Council purchased the site for the purpose of providing open space (Curlew Community Park was opened in 2019) and consideration of future provision of affordable housing. Through this project, Council hopes to provide homes for people with a connection to Hobsons Bay, who have previously struggled to find appropriate and affordable housing through the private market.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the Epsom Street Affordable Housing Draft Design Guidelines. The design guidelines will inform future development on the site and be included in any application for government funding to progress the project. In response to community feedback, revised design guidelines have been prepared and subsequently endorsed at the Council meeting on Tuesday 9 August 2022.

Council has also prepared a ‘What We Heard’ report which summarises the results of the community consultation, alongside a ‘Summary of Revisions’ document which highlights the significant changes made to the draft design guidelines in response to community feedback. All documents are available in the ‘Document Library’.

The next step is for the Hobson Bay Affordable Housing Trust to prepare an application for Victorian Government funding to deliver the project. Council will work closely with Housing Choices Australia (as the Trustee of the Hobsons Bay Affordable Housing Trust) to prepare the application. If the project is funded and progresses, further consultation will be undertaken with the local community.

Further project updates will be provided as we are informed of the outcome of the funding application.
