The McBain Street vehicle access point will be constructed in autumn 2018. It will offer a raised resting platform with seating and potentially a shade structure with a picnic table.

Why do we need vehicle access ramps?

Council is required to make provision for vehicle access onto the foreshore to:

  • collect seaweed
  • groom, grade and clean the sand
  • service and repair stormwater outfalls
  • allow for emergency vehicles such as: ambulances, police and fire services
  • allow for Altona life Saving club's all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and rescue boat

To reduce the impacts of predicted increases in average temperatures, number of hot days and extreme heat for the community it is proposed that a shade structure will be erected at McBain street located on the side of the vehicle access ramp.

The inclusion of the shade structure on the vehicle access ramp considered:

Location

  • Pier Street activity zone
  • the swimming zone
  • lifesaving services
  • amenities such as parking, toilets and shops

Function

  • minimise beach view restrictions
  • structurally sustain major wind, storm and rain events
  • provide appropriate air circulation
  • provide filtered shade (similar to what a tree provides)
  • meet all relevant standards and best practice guidelines
  • accommodate all abilities picnic settings
  • provide a retreat from the sun and heat whilst not impacting on the beach experience
  • sustain wind, rain and storm events
  • be accessible and inclusive for people of all ages and level of ability
  • maintain important public views, vistas and sightlines
  • meet recommended floor levels
  • enhance and support the existing character of the coastal location

Council is giving the community the opportunity to provide feedback on the construction of the shade structure. Below are the concept drawings of what is being proposed at McBain street access ramp.

If you would like to provide feedback please complete the feedback form below.

The feedback period will close at 5pm on 28 February 2018.
