We would like to thank everyone for their contributions and interest in this project.

In August and September 2020, Hobsons Bay City Council engaged Williamstown Primary School, Saint Mary’s Primary School, and the broader community in the area bounded by Parker Street, Cole Street, Hanmer Street, and Electra Street with a draft concept plan detailing a range of traffic treatments to provide a safer, pedestrian-friendly, and low-speed environment.

Revised concept plan

Throughout the consultation period, the community shared how they travel to and from the schools in the precinct. This has informed the following changes to pedestrian crossing proposed locations:

  • Hanmer Street - the existing school crossing on Hanmer Street to be relocated to the intersection of Hanmer Street and Cole Street
  • Parker Street - the proposed pedestrian crossing on Parker Street to be relocated closer to the roundabout and integrate with the existing kerb ramps
  • Electra Street - the existing school crossing on Electra Street to be relocated closer to the intersection of Electra Street and Parker Street and integrate with the existing kerb ramps

The relocation of the proposed and existing pedestrian crossings will not result in any loss of car parking.

An opportunity has also been identified to accommodate additional street tree planting within the precinct. Bluestone tree pits to support street tree planting are proposed in front of 14 Giffard Street and 1A Electra Street as well as within the existing car parking area on Cole Street between Aiken Street and Cecil Street. These street trees will increase visual cues for drivers and improve safety at these locations. This also aligns with the goals within Council's Urban Forest Strategy.

Works will be carried out in phases after detailed designs are finalised.

Funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) will allow for the implementation of works on Parker Street, Cole Street, Hanmer Street, and Electra Street in early to mid-2021.

Works in Cecil Street will be delivered alongside scheduled road rehabilitation for Cecil Street in FY 2021-22 for improved efficiencies and reduced disruption to the school community.
