Introducing GreenLine

Improving the flow of people through Spotswood and South Kingsville

One of the key issues identified through the recently endorsed Spotswood and South Kingsville Local Area Movement Plan and Better Places was the lack of cohesive bicycle connections in all directions.

The following key actions have been developed to improve the flow of people through Spotswood and South Kingsville:

  • East-West Bicycle Routes- an off-road connection providing access from Precinct 15 located on Blackshaws Road to the Spotswood Station and Douglas Parade
  • North-South Bicycle Routes – a cyclist connection along Hall Street, Spotswood connecting Federation Trail to the Newport Railway Station.

These two important cyclist connections are called ‘The GreenLine Project’.

GreenLine was further developed through community consultation on the Better Places Place Guide and has become one of the key project incorporated in the Place Guide. Click here to view the Better Places Spotswood & South Kingsville place guide.

Consultation was held throughout April to early June 2022. To find out more about the feedback we received please see the 'What we heard' report in the document library.

What you've told us

The local population is projected to double in the next 15 years it is clear that a significant step needs to be taken towards providing an efficient and practical alternative to private vehicle usage.

The future developments in the area are going to increase the need for local transport on our residential streets. The GreenLine project will help to deliver safe alternatives to private motor vehicles to maintain and improve local amenity.

What is GreenLine?

The vision for GreenLine is to provide major east / west and north / south active transport corridors that run through the heart of the Spotswood and South Kingsville communities. Linking all key destinations including the major future development precincts, schools, Spotswood Station and village centres. The GreenLine will also connect through to the Stony Creek and the Federation Trail and proposed West Gate Tunnel Veloway, providing a direct active transport link to Melbourne CBD and the regional cycling network.

However, GreenLine is not just about cycling. It’s about creating better connections for pedestrians and cyclists and removing the dominance cars have on our residential roads.
