Issue: Storage of vessels, caravans and trailers

Part 6, Clause 6.4

Current

Our current local law contains no provisions relating to boats, personal watercraft, caravans and trailers on roads and related areas.

Proposed

Adding a new clause that requires a person to obtain a permit to keep/store a vessel (boat, jet ski etc), caravan or trailer on a road, road related area, or council land, IF the person wants to keep/store it for longer than 28 consecutive days in any 12-month period.

Rationale

Storing boats, personal watercraft, caravans, and trailers on roads is common throughout the municipality. This causes several issues for the community, including:

  • Loss of on-street parking
  • Reduced visibility for drivers and pedestrians
  • Negative impact on the appearance of streets.

As the municipality’s population grows and businesses recover from the pandemic of 2020-2022, pressure for access to on-street parking is increasing in many areas. This new clause is one of the ways we will be able to more effectively manage competing demands for on-street parking, and improve road safety for pedestrians and drivers.
