After regular noise complaints from a number of residents in Craig Street in late January 2023, Council attempted to trial the installation of a mechanism that restricted the operating hours for the basketball court at Craig Street Reserve in Spotswood.

We acknowledge that this trial occurred without prior notification or consultation with the local community, and this resulted in unintended angst and restricted access to many local families and children during the day light savings summer period in particular.

Currently, the court has unrestricted use, and the damaged closure mechanism has been left attached for future repair.

We are now reviewing how local residents and in particular families with younger children are using and would like to continue to use the basketball court. The intention of this review and community consultation process is to reach a majority agreed position on reasonable day time and daylight savings use of the facility while also being considerate of the residents who live in Craig Street and are the closest to the courts and most affected by the noise when in use. It should be noted the main concern of residents living in Craig Steet is the use of the court after dark in winter and very late into the evenings and early hours.
