Better Places is a new approach to thinking about, designing and delivering projects.

It will take us away from the traditional model of delivering projects as ‘pieces’ to a more holistic approach where the whole ‘place’ is considered, driven by a community vision for each suburb.

Creating great places is a collaborative process with everyone that lives in, and loves Laverton – the community, traders, residents and students. To create a great place we need to think about the place as a whole, understand and enhance the things that make it special and know the elements needed to make the place better for the whole community into the future.

Earlier this year, we asked you what you love most about Laverton, what opportunities there are for change, and what projects or ideas you have to make Laverton better.

Take a look through all of your previous online contributions below!

Ensure the suburb isn't overtaken by too much subdivision

Laverton has a lovely open suburban feel, and while I agree that some of the new subdivisions are nice and bring a more modern feel, the council seems happy to approve anything without thinking about the longer terms effects on the suburb. There's currently not too much traffic in most of Laverton but in areas where there's more than one subdivision in a row, the roads are almost blocked with cars, as most of the new townhouses only have one garage which is usually used for storage or living…

Creative Hub

Laverton is the perfect setting to stimulate creativity. It is diverse and rich with culture and identity. I believe Laverton is an attractive place for artists, it just need more facilities to activate it. WSAS is a great start, but perhaps the council could purchase empty shops and rent them them to artists with incentives to bring in more people and truly reflect this creative potential. I love Laverton and hope to see it soar in the future.

Plenty of potential

I've lived and owned in Laverton for the past four years and I'm impressed by how much it has changed, but also excited about how much it can be easily improved. As an older suburb, it is well serviced by public transport, it's easily walked through and is close to nature. The best improvements can be made by updates to the streetscape that include; - widening of major footpaths on Bladin St and Maher Road; - increased traffic calming measures; - improvements to street trees; -…

Improvements required

Long term resident. Love the freeway access, train line, creek walk. Shops and eateries options slowly improving. That's where it ends. Too much like living in a slum. Too many renters on my street leave their bins out on the nature strip permanently. Hard rubbish and general rubbish everywhere. Derelict houses brought by investors but not developed. Overgrown lawns, hardly ever mown. Council has forgotten Laverton or it's just not a priority. Have made calls to council, very little done. Gym…

Cafes, bars & Restaurants - Investment needed!!

First of all I’d like there to be a big upgrade at the shopping precincts, with more cafes, restaurants and bars. Somewhere couples & families can enjoy an evening out, at the moment that’s not possible here. There’s too many run down shops and takeaways, also only Indian cuisines which I personally don’t eat therefore there needs to be more diversity in terms of eateries such as Italian/ European / Australian etc. More street lighting is needed, there is very little at the moment which isn’t…

Modernise & clean up Laverton!

Laverton has a lot of potential, we are close to the freeway & city, but for an inner city suburb it has been so badly neglected for so many years by the council. Neighbouring suburbs, Altona, Williamstown, Williams Landing seem to be receiving all the attention & funding. Laverton is one of the most run down & “forgotten” suburbs in the West. - Upgrading the shopping precincts is definitely needed, I don’t shop here, I go to Altona as there is nothing I would utilise in Laverton. I love the…

Arts precinct

I love the community arts vibe in Laverton that the woods street art space provides. I feed like Laverton has the potential to develop this further and become the arts precinct of the west - a Brunswick St, Fitzroy or Yarraville vibe. Public art would help, tidy up of woods st and the shopping strips, perhaps a usable community park in the centre. Laverton has great potential being so close to public transport and the city, it just needs some love and investment.

Rubbish collection

This is my nature strip after the rubbish collection came through last week - look at the mess they made, including a bag torn open and dropped on the ground. (The website's option to attach a photo is broken - so maybe fix that too.) Children play on our nature strips, surrounded by garbage! Please reinstate weekly rubbish collections, and ask the rubbish collectors to be more careful!

Better Enforcement of Keeping it Tidy

Council should start fining residents and developers for overgrown yards/nature strips and dumped rubbish/construction waste. There's so many construction projects which sit unfinished for years which are an eyesore and also encourage dumped rubbish. There's also a very large number of overgrown lawns, especially in the new townhouses. Maybe some of the people in the new townhouses don't have space or don't see the point of buying a lawnmower for their tiny patches of grass, or maybe there's…

More Facilities on the North Side and Upgrade Parks

The majority of Laverton is north of the train tracks yet most of the (few) facilities and (few) council projects in Laverton focus on the southern side of the tracks. The pool and gym is one of the few things on the north side of the tracks yet the council has decided to remove them and rebuild in Altona Meadows instead. There's a lot of little parks on the north side of the tracks but most of them are uninviting patches of grass with an occasional swing set. Obviously you can't build fancy…

Laverton

We have lived in Laverton for 2 years. We love all the playgrounds and parks for children. Would like to see the new builds and houses finished, for example near Bladin St shops there is an abandoned construction site - eyesore. Would like to see more people taking pride in their property and their gardens. I see a lot of potential for this suburb for young families as it has a good school and childcares, and lovely playgrounds, and friendly people. Love the public transport and freeway…

64-66 Bladin St Development

This formerly weed covered block and now half finished development is an eyesore with rubbish, construction waste, and weeds growing. Start fining the developer until they finish it or at least clean it up. It's right outside the bus stop and the nature strip has not been mowed making it difficult to access. Additionally too many developments neglect the footpath and naturestrip while they are constructed. Run inspections to ensure locals can still use the footpath unobstructed and that…

Restructure the Aviation Road Shopping precinct

The Aviation road shops are cloaset thing Laverton has to a shopping center but it's complelety disjointed with what seems to be an ad-hock placement of business adn carparks where ever they will fit. Could proper footpaths be placed between these carparks providing clear guidance on how you should travel between the businesses. Currently it seem each bussiness runs its own 10 car parking space with no flow between them. Council should tear up the current layout, purchase or swap with…

Bring back the pride in Laverton!

Great ideas and projects that could be implemented, there are many issues needing to be addressed to vastly improve what we already have. Pride in our area is sorely lacking. I have lived in this area for more than 50 years and the pride is at its lowest ebb. The front gardens are unkempt, nature strips not mowed, foliage hanging over footpaths. Buildings under construction are left unkempt and footpath access is in inaccessible, overgrown, covered in rubbish. The snapsendsolve app is great…

So much potential.

There is so much untapped potential in Laverton. - upgrade shopping precincts at Woods street - please somehow organise another bridge so that we are no longer reliant on the lifts at Laverton station. I’m aware that there may be permission issues with Metro but currently the lifts don’t fit regular ambulance gurneys and this is a risk to the public. - shade covers over park equipment - additional trees and facilities at the multiple parks in Laverton. - Encourage community garden…

Big Mistake

I really think it is a BIG mistake if the council is choosing to demolish the pool. It is in an amazing location to simply be refurbished and loved even more my the community. A refurbishment will bring more community to Laverton, rather than wherever else they might be planning to build. I dare say a new location will be somewhere where there is high traffic and it would only contest the that area more. I would rather see Laverton be refurbished, bringing the community in to the area.…

Time to modernise

Update Aviation Rd. Upgrade the train station. Both sides of Laverton Station are cringe worthy. Any part of Laverton that has a strip of shops (except for the small strip near the MFB station on Railway Ave) look like meth labs and no decent person would feel safe utilising any of the businesses. From Bladin St shops, that pocket near police station, Alma Ave shops and all of Aviation Rd, there is nothing appealing about any of them. Decades of neglect has won. For the love of god, please…

Rubbish on footpaths and in parks

Council need to have more hard collections each year and given the high number of rentals here and the diverse population, needs to provide multi-lingual information to organise hard rubbish collections. In relation to unkempt properties, Council officers should get out of their office and take a proactive approach to get the occupiers of the more slum like properties to mow their lawns and clean up their properties.

Bladin St Shuttle

Coordinate with PTV to offer a shuttle service up and down Bladin St from the station. The busses are irregular and unreliable and thus nearly all locals drive to the station taking up parking that could be used by those travelling further. This has been attempted in snobby suburbs without success but in Laverton it could work a treat. This would save Metro/PTV from adding even more parking and provide a great benefit to locals especially as the density of housing increases and more young…

Purchase land for future connection to Williams Landing

The Laverton RAAF base will closer sooner or later and when it does there will be an opportunity to link Laverton to Williams Landing enabling access to the modern shops and facilities in Williams Landing which are closer to many parts of Laverton than the current laverton sports facilities and central shopping center in Altona Meadows. The council should strategically purchase land on Sumers, Allen and Wackett St to enable a future connection with the new development beofre these block are…

Connection with Arts and Motocross Precinct in Laverton North

Please work with Wyndham Council to connect the rest of Laverton to the Arts, world class Motocross and Archery precinct they are developing in Laverton North in Old Geelong Road and Sayers Road. This is due to become a highly used precinct in the next 10 years - working with Wyndham to connect it and make it accessible to the rest of Laverton will provide arts and sports for Laverton youth and families to engage in :)

A few ideas

I've only just moved here but I echo the sentiments of a number of other people - the local shops look a bit run down and would be more appealing if the car parks / footpaths / general atmosphere was more positive. I also think it would be great to have more ways across the train tracks. A fenced dog park also sounds lovely. My own addition - I'd love to see bigger trees bordering the train line on Maher Road to reduce the noise slightly and increase the visual appeal - at the moment it…

Proper local shopping center with cafes and restaurants

Laverton is lacking a shopping precinct with a coles, Woolworths , Aldi etc. doesn’t have to be a major precinct but something with a supermarket and a couple cafes, small restaurants and shops would be good! As a current resident I am having to shop in either Altona Meadows or point cook so it would be nice to have something closer! Also an actual fenced off dog park would be great, possibly somewhere behind the gym?

Roads, drainage, footpaths and car parks

When I started here I immediately saw a few simple improvements that could help bring the place up to the standard of other areas within Hobsons Bay 1. Footpaths. There are many streets with a paved footpath on only one side. Why not pave the other side? 2. Drainage. When it rains the area of Railways Ave as it intersects with Aviation Rd always becomes flooded. Why not fix the drainage there? 3. Aviation Rd Shops The car park there needs some real work. Potholes, some gravel surfaces. It…

Need to get the ugly infrastructure stuff done first.

As someone born in Altona and raised/lived in the area for most of 56 years, there have been only cosmetic minor change in all those years. The strongest point has been the closeness and resilience of tesidents in days past. Councils need to redirect its resources more towards the needs of residences in the lower socio-economic areas instead of the constant use of resources to those self interested groups. Increasing the value and purpose of the area encourages pride and diminishes the acts by…
