Investigating future
opportunities for making Spotswood and South Kingsville more pedestrian,
cyclist and public transport friendly to reduce the dependence on private
vehicle usage.
Summary of key issues and opportunities gathered to date
The Spotswood Station is a significant asset that lacks the necessary supporting facilities. Parking, safety and end of trip facilities within and around the station are needed to reduce the dependence on private vehicle use.
The area’s diverse mix of employees, proximity to the CBD, and access to public transport provide an opportunity to prioritise pedestrian, cycling, and public transport networks.
Existing bus routes within Spotswood and South Kingsville are indirect and fail to conveniently link key destinations in the precinct - there is an opportunity to investigate a realignment of the routes to improve the bus services.
The Westgate Punt, connecting from the Spotswood Jetty through to Lorimer Street at Fisherman’s Bend is a significant asset but underutilised - there is an opportunity is to investigate upgrading this service to improve transport options into the future.
The current pedestrian and cyclist network has many missing pieces that reduce its safety, usability and effectiveness. Opportunities for improvement include:
- upgrading East/West and North/South linkages connecting destinations such as the Spotswood Station, shopping areas, schools and community and open space facilities
- upgrade and construction of new crossings that improve safety and access at locations such as railway crossings, Hyde Street/ Douglass Parade
- build upon the work that is currently underway on Hall Street to expand shared path connections to Stony Creek, Federation and the Coastal Trail
The LAMP will further explore the issues and opportunities relating to active transport.
Key projects and initiatives
The following projects and initiatives should be considered due to their impact over the pedestrians, cyclists and public transport network:
1. Hall Street Shared User Pathway
- A new shared user pathway connection is being delivered as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project. The pathway will link from the corner of Hall Street and Hudsons Road through to Federation Trail and Stony Creek to the north, and south along Hall Street as part of the future cycleway following the railway line.
