Williamstown Community Garden

Background

Hobsons Bay City Council (Council) is committed to open spaces that improve community health and wellbeing, encourage sustainable living and restore biodiversity. Community gardens that are appropriately designed and maintained contribute significantly to these objectives. Following a high volume of requests from Williamstown residents and a submission from a local community group, Council has assessed a small corner of the Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park at the corner of Ann and Hanmer Streets as a potential community garden site, providing it responds to the needs of the wider community and complements the existing reserve landscape.

Proposed Site

The proposed site for the community garden is a small rectangle, away from the main part of the Williamstown Coastal Heritage Park, at the corner of Ann and Hanmer streets, next to Williamstown Train Station. Council has been working closely with Parks Victoria and Heritage Victoria to ensure this small area of the Coastal Park does not conflict with any existing heritage citations, heritage planning overlays or environmental protection overlays.

Process

Council is currently undertaking a community consultation process to understand the views of surrounding residents. If there is broad support for the community garden, Council will work with the community garden group to create a design that responds to the needs and views of the community as well as a governance plan to ensure the space is appropriately managed and maintained.
