What we heard

60 people attended the community information session.

Paper surveys were taken on the day and have been included in the above figures.

Other topics that were touched on by drop in attendees and survey respondants included

Reasons why respondents supported the garden:

  • Increasing access to fresh food to lower cost of living
  • Gardening opportunities for people living in apartments
  • Build community connections and greater opportunities to meet neighbours
  • Mental and physical health benefits of gardening
  • Learning about sustainable living and other skills
  • A place for children to learn about food and plants

Concerns raised by respondents:

  • The natural amenity of the site and its sea views should be preserved
  • The site should remain a public open space that benefits the whole community rather than a few
  • Governance and maintenance of the site over the long term must be addressed
  • Potential for increased vandalism
  • The site should be accessible for people with a disability or mobility issues
  • The street has changed a lot already due to development
  • Existing trees should remain and more native plants should be grown
  • The site requires protection from strong wind and salty breezes
  • Priority should be given to people experiencing food insecurity who do not have space to garden at home

Where to from here:
Council is considering community feedback and will undertake additional soil testing and a cultural heritage assessment before further discussions with Parks Victoria. We will provide another community update in November 2024.
