The swimming and life saving club facility includes spaces for core life saving operations and training facilities that have been planned to align with Life Saving Victoria’s design requirements.

The existing pool is non-compliant and nearing the end of its useful life. Although the original concept plans, which were developed to attract Government funding included options for a new swimming pool onsite, with the increase in the costs of materials, construction and professional services experienced in the time since the funding commitment was announced, the option to include a new swimming pool as part of the redevelopment is no longer achievable within the available budget.

In consultation with all project stakeholders, it was agreed to proceed with upgrades that can be delivered within the available project budget, and deliver the core life saving requirements the Club needs to serve the community for many years to come.

The current design sees a reduction of six car parks to accommodate the new redevelopment footprint. To offset the loss of these car parks, replacement parks will be provided on the street in the location of the existing eastern cross over which will also be removed as part of the redevelopment.

The current proposed plans are all single storey with the exception of a small 2-storey component included to accommodate a new life saving observation tower on the south-eastern corner of the site. This is a core lifesaving requirement and essential for providing Life saving services.

The floor level of new buildings constructed as part of the redevelopment is however proposed to be raised to 3.0M Australian Height Datum (AHD) which is up to 0.6M above the existing floor level of the current club hall building. This is a Melbourne Water requirement in order to address the predicted rise in sea level requirements of the area.

No, the upgraded area in front of the existing club hall building will become public open space that is managed and maintained by Council. A new members lawn area is proposed on the current concept on public exhibition which feedback can be provided on.

The existing club hall will be retained and restored as a part of the project. Key heritage items, including the foundation stone and significant sight lines to the existing club hall are being preserved.

These works are anticipated to start in February 2025 and are expected to be completed in Sept 2026.

The club will continue to operate and provide a life saving service out of temporary facilities while works are occurring. The location and size of temporary facilities will be finalised in the next stage of the design process.

This will be determined at a later date; construction vehicles and access times will be coordinated to keep heavy vehicles off residential roads as much as is feasible.
